How to Change Thoughts from Negative to Positive

I know it's not New Year's but how about making a resolution that will change your life forever? Breaking bad habits and changing them to healthy habits is alot easier said than done, I know it took me 3 years to actually quit smoking from the time I said I was going to. But fear not bad habiters, there is a way to be proactive in your change from bad to healthy! Most people have wonderful ideas on how to change from bad to good but alot of people do not recognize the main change takes place in the mind. Changing your thought process is the catalyst to changing your behavior. In order to change a behavior we must first alter our thoughts from negative to positive. It is easy to get swept up in the moment and throw yourself a pity party, but why not use some techniques to help you recognize your pity party and get your out of that negative thinking funk? We do not always have to be the victim.

First step is figuring out why these negative thoughts exist, was it because you had a bad relationship, or a fear of taking action or even low self esteem? Any of these things are factors involved your negative thinking, acknowledging these issues will help you over step the negative hurdle and jump into positive ground. There are certain things you can do to be proactive in your thought process. The first being Self Affirmation. You should always affirm the good in your life, like thinking today is going to be a good day (even despite over-sleeping your alarm) it's all in your mind to perceive a situation accordingly.

Studies have shown that people who exercise are more positive so, instead of taking a cab walk to work and affirm to yourself the positive you are projecting, let those endorphins flow!

Positive self-talk is a third way to get you thinking more positive. Everyone has an internal dialogue with themselves and its important to be your best friend when communicating with yourself, don't hold on a grudge with yourself because of a poor choice, instead remind yourself you are only human and you are doing the best you can.

The next step is believing in yourself. Many people tend to doubt what they are capable, but believing in yourself is the key to success.

Another way to be more positive is to eat better. I know it sounds weird, but you are what you eat. Everything you eat effects the way your body functions including your brain. Many studies have shown that the way people feel is correlated with their diet and what they choose to eat. Maybe munching on those Cheetos are making you feel worse than better.

In order to be more positive you have to stay in tune with what you are thinking and how your thoughts turn into actions. If you police your brain and shut down the negative thinking you are doing yourself a favor. Brain waves are imprinted for years and years and we have to stop them from firing off in the same old negative direction. This takes time and patience but it really works when you hold yourself accountable for what your brain is thinking and projecting.

How to Let Go and Forgive

Everyone has been hurt sometime or another. By people we love, by people we dislike, by complete strangers and good friends. Being treated poorly can often leave a lack of trust, broken hearts and painful emotions. While it is easy to get caught up in the pain, it is doing more damage than good by not letting go. Reliving pain over and over again is not healthy and only makes you feel worse. Feeling worse causes some problems in our lives which are feeling unhappy, feeling distrustful, it can put a strain on a relationship and it causes people to shut down instead of opening up to new people.

Being happy is pretty much everyone I know life's goal. So why keep the cycle of hurt going when you can break free and be happy again? This is something that I learned the hard way, and have found myself struggling with the hurt and anger that I felt from an incident that occurred in my teenage years. Not letting go put a strain on not only my relationships but my happiness. I finally let go a few years ago and saw a great improvement with my relationships and became happy and whole again.

Letting negativity that occurs in your life permeate your soul only feeds the misery. You can be proactive in eliminating this negative feelings of pain by forgiving . Forgiveness does not necessarily mean forgetting what has happened in the past, or expecting someones behavior to change. It is something that you can do for yourself to help you find closure. Letting go of the pain and anger and moving to a peaceful place is the ultimate goal when we forgive. Forgiving people is not going to happen over night but you can do things for yourself and your mind to change your thought process and learn to let go. After doing some research online I found a great article on some things that can help you move on.

1. Commit to letting go. You are not going to change in a second or maybe not even in a day. It can take time to get over something, so commit to changing because you recognize the pain is hurting you.

2. Weigh the PROS and CONS. Ask yourself what problem does this pain cause you? Does it affect your relationship with this person? With others? Does it affect your career or family? Does it stop you from pursuing your dreams or becoming a better person? Does it cause you unhappiness? Answer all of these questions and realize it's time to take action to change. Think of the benefits of forgiveness, how it will make you happier, more peaceful, improve relationships and your life in general?

3. Realize you have a choice. You cannot control other people's actions and you shouldn't try to. However you can control your own actions and your thoughts. You can stop reliving the hurt and you can make a choice to move forward. You and only you have the power to move on. It takes time to learn how to exercise this power but the more your practice the easier it becomes.

4. Empathize. Put yourself in the other person's shoes. Try to understand where they were coming from when they hurt you. You need to start with the assumption that person isn't a bad person, but just made a mistake. Ask yourself what they could have been thinking, or how past incidents in their lives have affected their behavior. You are not saying that their behavior is right you are just trying to understand where they are coming from and their point of view.

5. Understand your responsibility. Ask yourself if you could have been partially responsible for what happened. What could you have done to prevent it and how can you prevent it from happening in the future? We must realize that we are not victims, but we are PARTICIPANTS in life.

6. Focus on the Present. Since you have reflected on the past, realize the past is over. There is no going back or redoing the past. The incident isn't happening anymore except in your mind. Reliving the past causes stress and more emotional suffering. Try to focus on the present moment when you feel yourself going towards the past. Actively change your thought process and try to be in the now. Look for the joy in life not the pain.

7. Allow peace to enter into your life. When you are focusing on the present focus on your breathing. Imagine each breath going out is the pain from the past being released from your body and mind. Focus on each breath going in as peace filling up your body and mind. Release the pain from the past with each breath out and let the peace enter with each breath in. Go forward thinking no longer of the past but the present peace.

8. Feel compassion. Forgive the people and realize that by forgiving you are allowing yourself to be happy and move forward. Wish the person happiness and empathize towards their mistake. Let love from them and those around you grow in your heart.

Like I previously mentioned these changes do not happen over night but if you are being a willing participant in life you must acknowledge it's in your power to move on and be happy again..

Food Safety During Power Outages

Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency
Did you know that a flood, fire, national disaster, or the loss of power from high winds, snow, or ice could jeopardize the safety of your food? Knowing how to determine if food is safe and how to keep food safe will help minimize the potential loss of food and reduce the risk of foodborne illness. This fact sheet will help you make the right decisions for keeping your family safe during an emergency.

ABCD’s of Keeping Food Safe in an Emergency

Always keep meat, poultry, fish, and eggs refrigerated at or below 40 °F and frozen food at or below 0 °F. This may be difficult when the power is out.

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Obtain dry or block ice to keep your refrigerator as cold as possible if the power is going to be out for a prolonged period of time. Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold an 18-cubic foot full freezer for 2 days. Plan ahead and know where dry ice and block ice can be purchased.

Be prepared for an emergency...

... by having items on hand that don’t require refrigeration and can be eaten cold or heated on the outdoor grill. Shelf-stable food, boxed or canned milk, water, and canned goods should be part of a planned emergency food supply. Make sure you have ready-to-use baby formula for infants and pet food. Remember to use these items and replace them from time to time. Be sure to keep a hand-held can opener for an emergency.

Consider what you can do ahead of time to store your food safely in an emergency. If you live in a location that could be affected by a flood, plan your food storage on shelves that will be safely out of the way of contaminated water. Coolers are a great help for keeping food cold if the power will be out for more than 4 hours—have a couple on hand along with frozen gel packs. When your freezer is not full, keep items close together—this helps the food stay cold longer.

Digital, dial, or instant-read food thermometers and appliance thermometers will help you know if the food is at safe temperatures. Keep appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer at all times. When the power is out, an appliance thermometer will always indicate the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer no matter how long the power has been out. The refrigerator temperature should be 40 °F or below; the freezer, 0 °F or lower. If you’re not sure a particular food is cold enough, take its temperature with a food thermometer.

A Book with a Laugh!

Throw a Tomato was recommended to me as a funny book that helps you get out of a bad mood. For example this book recommends:
  1. Throw a big tantrum. Write letters seethed in hate, with swearing and heavy doses of useless bitching included. No one will ever see it, so go nuts. Then destroy it (see #3).
  2. Have a biscotti snack. It’s the gnawing and angry crunching that really does the trick. Don’t bother trying to make it yourself. It is doubtful that baking will be any assistance to you when you feel like this.
  3. Scribble and Shred. Get yourself a big, bold marker and scribble really hard. Slam the tip onto the paper to the point where the ink splatters. Tear it to shreds. Throw all the pieces. Leave it on the floor.
  4. Move your body, fast and furious. Run down the street. Do an interpretive dance to death metal. Head to the swings. Take it out on that mountainside.

When in doubt... throw a fried egg on it!

I recently had an experience with a fried egg that will forever shape the way I use eggs. I was on a trip to Half Moon Bay, CA and came across this quaint deli next to a gourmet food shop. My mother and I were starving and dying for some caffeine so we decided to take a look at the menu. After reading their entire menu, my eyes kept returning to the most peculiar breakfast item, Breakfast pizza. My mother and I obviously could not turn down this once in a lifetime treat and ordered it immediately. As I sat on the patio waiting for my food, I couldn't help but wonder how delicious this meal was going to be and then voila, right as I could not wait any longer the waitress served us a sourdough cheese pizza (with sauce) and a fried egg on top. I was hesitant but intuitively knew this was going to be one amazing bite. The richness of the yolk and the warmth of the pizza with the combination of tomato sauce was unreal! I've always enjoyed fried eggs but clearly was closed minded to the richness they can add to a meal. Whether you throw an egg on top of pizza, steak or even tomato soup, fried eggs add a texture and taste that you can not help but indulge in.

The Truth About Spray Tanning

Clearly getting a spray tan is healthier than exposing your skin to harmful UV rays from the sun, but I have always wondered what kinds of chemicals are included in these tanning mixtures. I've ready articles about the weird ingredients used in make up (such as whale vomit) and I always imagined that the tanning solutions that people use at their neighborhood tanning salons could not be all that healthy either.

Kristyn Pradas spraying a client
While visiting a friend in the hospital I came across the June 2011 issue of Allure magazine. This magazine happened to have an extensive section about the top places to get spray tanned in the country. Reading this article started a series of events that lead to me receiving the best spray tan ever, and also an education on the on the components in tanning solutions. I went to Suvara at Senses Spa and had Kristyn Pradas (who is featured as the top tanner in NYC and also pictured to the right). She had impeccable professionalism and an eye for detail. She told me about Suvara's all natural solutions that contain tons of antioxidants and moisturizers that rejuvenate your skin. The tan was $95 but well worth the price. When I followed Ms. Pradas' directions, my tan lasted for well over a week, streak free and gorgeous. I had no problem handing over $95 to not only look great, I also felt great knowing that getting this specific tanning formula was a beauty treatment in itself. Not all tanning salons and spas offer this all natural solution so I highly recommened asking questions and make sure you are getting the best tan for your dollar. When in doubt seek out Kristyn Pradas at Senses Spa, 138 Fifth Ave. NY,NY, 212-242-7979.

Kristyn Pradas as been featured for her talent as the number one spray tanner in multiple top magazines such as Self, Allure June 2011, and Allure July 2011. Pradas also has helped Cosmopolitan Photo shoots and The Fairfield County Magazine.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend?

The mineral kingdom offers more than just diamonds for gem enthusiasts to drool over. Not all gems are minerals; some for example such as amber and jet are of vegetable origin while others, such as coral and pearl are of animal origin. There are a lot of stones and gems out there that are just as beautiful as diamonds in their own unique way (and most of them are a fraction of the cost too).

One of my personal favorites is turquoise. I love turquoise earrings, necklaces, bracelets rings, you name it, I'll wear it. I find this stone much more attractive than a diamond. Recently driving through Arizona and New Mexico I came across some beautiful native turquoise jewelry at some tourist shops off the old Route 66. My companion had to wipe the drool off the counter as I took in all the stunning and intricate jewelry designs that littered the jewelry cases at every store we stopped at. The beauty of the red rocks of the southwest is definitely complimented by its turquoise jewelery. Many Native Americans make custom pieces to sell at these tourist stops, a practice held for centuries, making turquoise the original precious stone in America.

Despite loving the natural classics I recently met an awesome chick who makes some very unique and beautiful jewelry using elements of life and death in her work. Amanda Kamm is the brilliant designer and if you are in the San Francisco Bay area you cannot miss the Endless Summer Fashion/Jewelry Show where she will be showcasing some of her work. Please visit Miss Kamm's website Amandakamm.com
