Diamonds are a girl's best friend?

The mineral kingdom offers more than just diamonds for gem enthusiasts to drool over. Not all gems are minerals; some for example such as amber and jet are of vegetable origin while others, such as coral and pearl are of animal origin. There are a lot of stones and gems out there that are just as beautiful as diamonds in their own unique way (and most of them are a fraction of the cost too).

One of my personal favorites is turquoise. I love turquoise earrings, necklaces, bracelets rings, you name it, I'll wear it. I find this stone much more attractive than a diamond. Recently driving through Arizona and New Mexico I came across some beautiful native turquoise jewelry at some tourist shops off the old Route 66. My companion had to wipe the drool off the counter as I took in all the stunning and intricate jewelry designs that littered the jewelry cases at every store we stopped at. The beauty of the red rocks of the southwest is definitely complimented by its turquoise jewelery. Many Native Americans make custom pieces to sell at these tourist stops, a practice held for centuries, making turquoise the original precious stone in America.

Despite loving the natural classics I recently met an awesome chick who makes some very unique and beautiful jewelry using elements of life and death in her work. Amanda Kamm is the brilliant designer and if you are in the San Francisco Bay area you cannot miss the Endless Summer Fashion/Jewelry Show where she will be showcasing some of her work.
